Modern Mitered Crochet Baby Blanket

I am so thrilled with this project! The modern mitered crochet baby blanket features a super easy repeat of single crochet stitches crocheted in the back loop only, finished with a slip stitch border.

I wanted to do something a little different than simple stripes, and I am thrilled with the results! Something a little asymmetrical, a little textured, and with lovely modern colors.

The slip stitch border alternates colors every row and to me looks almost like rope. I love the effect!

The blanket is worked in super bulky yarn, making it a fast project for last-minute gifting. Great for beginners too since it works up so quickly!

  • Size 6 bulky weight yarn, approximately 720 yards. For this pattern I used:
    • 5 skeins Yarn Bee True Colors in Ivory

  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Modern Mitered Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

Ch 3. Sl st join to the first ch. Turn.

Row 1: In the center of the circle you just made, 3 scs. Pm in the second sc. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 2: Sc in the blo of the first st. In the marked st (the corner), 3 scs under BOTH loops (this prevents large eyelets from forming in your corners). Pm in the second sc in the corner. Sc in the blo of the last stitch in the row. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 3: Sc in the blo across until you reach the marked corner st. 3 scs under both loops in the marked st. Pm in the second stitch of your corner. Sc in the blo to end of row. Ch 1 and turn.

Repeat row 3 to desired size.

Border

The border is always worked right side facing. The sl st border does tend to be tight! I suggest either sizing up your crochet hook or stretching it gently through blocking your work.

Round 1: Pull up a loop of yarn in the upper righthand corner. Ch 1 to attach, then sc in the same st. Sc in each st across. In each corner, 3 scs. Pm in the second (middle) st in each corner. As you work along the two raw edges, try to work under at least two strands of yarn so each stitch is more secure. When you reach the beginning of the round, sl st to the first sc. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Round 2: Pull up a loop of yarn in the blo of any corner st. Ch 1 to attach, then sl st in the same st. Sl st in the blo of each st across. In the blo of each marked st, sl st, ch 1, pm, sl st. When you reach the beginning of the round, sl st in the blo, ch 1, pm, and sl st under BOTH loops of the first sl st in the round to join. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Round 3: Pull up a loop of yarn in the blo of the marked ch 1 in a different corner. Ch 1 to attach. Sl st in the blo of each st across. When you reach each marker, ch 1 above the marker, pm, then continue to sl st in the blo of each st across. When you reach the start of the round, ch 1, pm, sl st under BOTH loops of the first sl st in the round to join. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Rounds 4-5: Repeat Round 3.

I suggest joining the new yarn color in a different corner each row to help with the bulk of weaving in ends, especially since this is a such a skinny border.

Tips for Blocking Acrylic Yarn

Acrylic is a hearty yarn that can be stretched a bit as you block! I love TL Yarn Crafts’ video tutorial on blocking acrylic, which you can see here.

I hope you enjoy this pattern!
