Cozy SC Spike Stitch Baby Blanket

Learn how to crochet the alternative alternating single crochet spike stitch! Paired with super bulky yarn, you’ll make a deliciously cozy baby blanket for the colder months.

I just love the woven look of this stitch! I was looking for a stitch that would play nicely with middle-of-the-row color changes, and I am pleased with the result.

This blanket is the first in a two-part series because I made coordinating blankets for a set of twins! The second blanket features the same yarn in a slightly different colorway and the double crochet spike stitch. You can find that pattern here: Cozy DC Spike Stitch Baby Blanket

You should be able to tell what side is the right side and what side is the wrong side because you’ll have these pretty horizontal lines on the front side of your work! Here’s an image of the right side of the fabric:

And here’s an image of the wrong side:

The border is worked in the same stitch for a neat finish.

For a simpler option, you can create this blanket using ordinary sc spike stitch, and there are many great tutorials online already! Here is a video tutorial for sc spike st.

Cozy Spike Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

Ch 65.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. You’ll have 64 scs. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 2: (rs) Sc in the blo of the 1st st. Sc beneath the next st (spike st). *Sc in the blo of the next st, sc spike st beneath the next st* across. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 3: (ws) Sc in the flo of the 1st st (spike st from previous row). Sc beneath the next sc (spike st). *sc in the flo of the next st, sc spike st beneath the next st* across. Ch 1 and turn.

Rep Rows 2 and 3, changing colors whenever you run out of yarn, leaving about an 8 inch tail to weave in your ends. Often you will run out of yarn in the middle of rows, which is just fine! Work your colors in the following order:

  • Houston Cream
  • Catskills Corner
  • Huntington Foliage
  • Cocoa Beach
  • Lakeland Olive
  • Ashland Pine
  • Riverdale Tweed
  • Chicago Charcoal
  • Stowe Sugar Maple

I ended up with about 81 rows.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Border

The border is always worked rs facing.

Rnd 1: Pull up a loop of yarn in the upper righthand corner. Ch 1, then sc in the same st. Sc in each st across. In each corner, sc, ch 1, pm, sc. When you reach your starting corner, sc, ch 1, pm, sl st to the first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc back into the marked ch 1 sp (this keeps your seam in the corner), *sc in the blo of the next st, sc beneath the next st (spike st)* across. In the ch 1 corner sp, sc, ch 1, pm, sc. Corners should always be flanked by the same sts, either sc blo sts or spike sts. Rep around the blanket. When you reach the starting corner, sc, ch 1, pm, sl st to the first sc.

Rnds 3-6: Rep Rnd 2, making sure to work sc blo sts into any spike sts and spike sts into any scs.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Pin for later!
