Cozy DC Spike Stitch Baby Blanket

Make a super cozy baby blanket that little ones can take with them through the toddler years into early childhood!

All you need to know are basic double crochet stitches. Insert your hook beneath dcs and you’ll master the dc spike stitch, giving your blanket a lovely woven texture.

This is a nice neutral option! Great for baby showers where the parents aren’t sharing or finding out the gender ahead of time. It’s such a nice color combination and could even serve as a small throw blanket draped over that living room couch!

This blanket is one of two I made for a set of twins. The other blanket is an SC spike stitch baby blanket with shades of green included in the design.

I love how the stitches in these two blankets complement one another!

The SC Spike Stitch Baby Blanket has a tighter weave. You can learn more about that stitch and get the baby blanket pattern here.

This blanket turned out bigger than I’d expected! The super bulky weight yarn tends to stretch as you work and the project gets heavier and heavier as you go! Use the gauge information to adjust as you see fit. Since it’s such a large blanket, I think it would also look lovely with a narrower start (say, a starting ch of 52) and fewer yarn colors. You’ll end up with a truer ombre if you omit the bold orange and black skeins, for example. You could also try sizing down to a size N/9mm crochet hook, which is what the yarn label suggests. Good luck and enjoy!

Alternating DC Spike Stitch Baby Blanket

To adjust the width of the blanket, ch any even number.

Ch 66.

Row 1: First 2 chs do not count as a st. Dc in the 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. You’ll have 64 dcs. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 2: *Dc in the first dc, dc spike stitch beneath the next dc*, repeat until there are 2 dcs left in the row. Dc in the next 2 dcs. Ch 1 and turn.

Repeat Row 2 to desired length, changing colors whenever you run out of the current working skein. For this blanket I crocheted 40 rows.

Border

Rnd 1: Pull up a loop of yarn in the upper righthand corner. Ch 1, then sc in the same st. Sc in each st across. In each corner, sc, ch 1, pm, sc. When you reach your starting corner, sc, ch 1, pm, sl st to the first sc. You should end up with about 64 sts across the top and bottom of the blanket, and 46 sts along the sides.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, dc back into the marked ch 1 sp (this keeps your seam in the corner), dc in each st across. In each corner, dc, ch 1, pm, dc. When you reach your starting corner, dc, ch 1, pm, sl st to the first dc.

Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc back into the marked ch 1 sp, dc in the next st, dc spike st beneath the next dc, rep to ch 1 corner sp. In the ch 1 corner sp, dc, ch 1, pm, dc. Corners should always be flanked by the same sts, either regular dc sts or dc spike sts. Rep around the blanket. When you reach the starting corner, dc, ch 1, pm, sl st to the first dc.

Rnd 4: Rep rnd 3, making sure to work dcs into any spike sts and spikes into any dcs.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Pin for later!

  1. […] This blanket is the first in a two-part series because I made coordinating blankets for a set of twins! The second blanket features the same yarn in a slightly different colorway and the double crochet spike stitch. You can find that pattern here: Cozy DC Spike Stitch Baby Blanket […]
