Chunky Slanted Shells Crochet Baby Blanket

Need to work up an adorable baby blanket fast? The Chunky Slanted Shells Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern is your ticket to having a baby shower gift ready in a week or less!

This pattern is a super easy-to-memorize, one-row repeat that just flies off the hook! Worked in bulky yarn, this shell stitch baby blanket is so quick and so satisfying.

While the pattern is shown in pink yarn, I do think the simple single crochet border makes this a neutral enough pattern for baby boys or girls. You might choose to opt for another color, depending. :)

I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Turning ch never counts as a st.

To adjust the width of this pattern, ch any multiple of 5+3.

For an even faster, borderless option, ch 88 and work 51 rows for a blanket measuring 34″ x 34″.

Ch 78.

Row 1: Sc in the second ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn. <77 scs>

Row 2: Dc in the first st, sk 2 sts, work (3 dc, ch 1, dc) in the next st (shell made), *sk 4 sts, shell in the next st; rep from * across until there are 3 sts left in the row, sk 2 sts, dc in the last st, ch 1, turn. <15 shells, 2 dcs>

Optional version of Row 2: To minimize the gaps that form in this row, after completing your first shell st, you can work the first st in each subsequent shell as a cluster. So: Dc in the first st, sk 2 sts, work (3 dc, ch 1, dc) in the next st, *sk 2 sts, work cluster across the next 3 sts, in the same st as the last part of the cluster work (2 more dc, ch 1, dc); rep from * across until there are 3 sts left in the row, sk 2 sts, dc in the last st, ch 1, turn. <15 shells, 2 dcs>

Here is what the rest of the shell st looks like after working the initial cluster:

So, the first st in the shell is chunky, but it isn’t obvious at all on the other side of the work!

Row 3: Dc in the first st, *fpdc in the next st, work (3 dc, ch 1, dc) in the next ch-1 sp, sk 3 sts; rep from * across, dc in the last st, ch 1, turn. <15 shells, 15 fpdcs, 2 dcs>

Row 4: Dc in the first st, *fpdc in the next st, work (3 dc, ch 1, dc) in the next ch-1 sp, sk 4 sts; rep from * across, dc in the last st, ch 1, turn. <15 shells, 15 fpdcs, 2 dcs>

Rows 5-46: Rep Row 4.

Single Crochet Border

Border Notes: Border is worked in joined rnds same side-facing. The first corner has 2 sc at the start of the rnd and 1 sc at the end of the rnd to keep the seam in the corner. In Rnd 1, working across the top of the blanket we need to decrease one st per shell to match the bottom edge. As you work along the sides, aim to place 5 sc for every 3 row-ends for a border that lies flat.

Rnd 1: Work (sc, pm, sc) in the first st, sc in the next st, *sc2tog in the ch-1 and the next st, sc in the next 4 sts; rep from * across, in the corner work (3 sc, pm in the middle sc), sc along the first edge, in the corner work (3 sc, pm in the middle sc), sc in each ch across the bottom, in the corner work (3 sc, pm in the middle sc), sc along the final edge, in the corner work 1 sc, sl st join. <Excluding marked corners, you should have 77 sts along each edge of the blanket.>

Rnd 2: Ch 1, work (sc, pm, sc) in the marked corner, [sc across, in the corner work (3 sc, pm in the middle sc)] three times, sc along the final edge, in the starting corner work 1 sc, sl st join. <Excluding marked corners, you should have 79 sts along each edge of the blanket.>

Rnds 3-4: Rep Rnd 2. <At the end of Rnd 4, excluding marked corners, you should have 83 sts along each edge of the blanket.>

Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends.

Pin for later!
