Fast and Easy Single Crochet Temperature Baby Blanket

Join in on the fun of making your own temperature blanket! The single crochet temperature baby blanket pattern is a smaller scale project, great for making a historical blanket or working up day-by-day in real time.

I worked up a historical blanket for the year my oldest was born! She’s 5 now and it’s a lovely lap blanket for her. And, one that I hope she will pass down if she has a daughter one day.

A very common experience is making a temperature blanket that turns out way too big! I think temperature blankets are a wonderful way to commemorate baby’s first year, so I have been on a mission to create temperature blanket patterns that are baby-blanket sized!

This pattern is super beginner-friendly, uses worsted weight yarn (a widely available yarn weight in a bazillion colors), and is less overwhelming than a typical temperature blanket where you might be crocheting 200+ stitches a day.

I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Tips for Planning Your Temperature Blanket

You can get a run-down of everything I’ve learned making a temperature blanket in the class I taught for FaveCrafts! You can watch the replay here: Learn How to Make a Temperature Blanket.

The greatest resource on planning your temperature blankets is temperature-blanket.com! This is a free resource. You can input your location and set a time frame to get your historical weather data, then export to a CSV file. You can then sort the data by temperature to get a rough idea of the number of daily highs you can expect for each temperature range throughout the year. This should help you plan how much yarn you need and even what ranges you’d like to go with!

I live in the Chicago area, and I wanted to do 10 degree increments so the colors would be easier to memorize.

A few other temperature blanket planning resources I love:

  • I really enjoyed Smitha’s article at Smiling Colors about planning her temperature blanket, plus mistakes to avoid: How To Make A Temperature Blanket: Tips, Mistakes + Fixes!
  • I LOVED the Loophole Fox’s temperature blanket course during the Crochet Blanket Summit in 2023. Unfortunately that course is no longer available, but you can check out Shannon’s wonderfully thorough article on her temperature blanket experience here: 2023 Crochet Temperature Blanket.
  • I love all of TL Yarn Crafts’ temperature blankets! The colors Toni chooses are stunning. You can find all of her patterns and resources linked up here: Linen Pixel Temperature Blanket.

I had fun including variegated and heathered yarns! Don’t feel like you have to go with just solids!

Temperature-blanket.com has an entire project planner, yarn palettes based on popular yarn brands, different constructions, and more. Have fun playing around with it!

Single Crochet Temperature Baby Blanket Pattern

With your day 1 color, ch 101.

Row 1: Continuing with your day 1 color, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, changing colors every 30 sts* as needed, ch 1, turn. <100 scs here and throughout>

*When there are less than 30 sts left in a row, you will complete the day’s color by wrapping onto the next row. For example, at the end of Row 1, you will work 10 sts in a color, then the remaining 20 at the start of Row 2. Each day should ALWAYS be 30 sts.

To change colors mid-row, work your 30th st up until the last yarn over:

Pull up a loop in the next color:

Pull through.

Snug up the ends a bit so the stitch size matches those around it.

Here are a few more stitches worked in the next color. Perfect!

Rows 2-110 (or 111 if it is a leap year): Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. Work any remaining stitches in the color of your choice to finish the last row.

Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in all those ends! If you save weaving in ends until this point (like I did), give yourself a good week to weave them in. It takes a while!

Single Crochet Border

Border Notes: Border is worked in turned rounds. During Rnd 1, as you work along the sides of your blanket, aim to place 4 scs for every 5 row-ends for a border that lies flat.

Rnd 1: With your border color, pull up a loop of yarn in the upper right-hand corner, ch 1, sc in the same st, [sc across, in the corner work (sc, ch 1**, sc)] four times ending the final rep at **, sl st join, ch 1, turn. <Not including ch-1 corners, the top and bottom of the blanket should have 100 sts, and the sides should have 88 sts.>

Rnd 2: Sc in the ch-1 corner, [sc across, in the corner work (sc, ch 1**, sc)] four times ending the final rep at **, sl st join, ch 1, turn. <2 sts increased on each side of the blanket.>

Rnds 3-8: Rep Rnd 2. <At the end of Rnd 8, excluding ch-1 corners, the top and bottom of the blanket should have 114 sts, and the sides should have 102 sts.>

Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends.

Pin for later!
