Learning to Crochet Scarf

Want to learn how to crochet? Create the Learning to Crochet Scarf!

This crochet scarf tutorial features four of the most common stitches in crochet. Once you learn these building blocks, you will be well on your way to crocheting larger projects using a wide variety of stitch patterns!

upper left: single crochet | upper right: double crochet | lower left: half double crochet | lower right: treble crochet

I designed this scarf to teach teens how to crochet! While coasters and dishcloths are some of the best patterns to learn, I thought teens especially might enjoy creating a fun accessory they would get to wear.

I’ve linked to some of my favorite video tutorials below for learning to crochet. All beginners should either learn in person, when possible, or via video.

I hope you enjoy this pattern! And if you are new, I hope you enjoy learning to crochet!!!

I learned how to crochet in 2013 by watching this wonderful video tutorial from Naztazia. If you have never picked up a crochet hook and yarn before, start with this video before working up the Learning to Crochet Scarf.

The above video covers all the basics for getting started as well as the single crochet stitch.

This video is part 2. Naztazia teaches double crochet, half double crochet, and treble crochet in this video! These videos are your foundations for completing this scarf, whether you need a refresher or are brand new to crochet.

Beginners are encouraged to use stitch markers to mark the first and last stitch of each row OR count stitches every row to make sure you maintain the correct number. It’s very easy to accidentally drop stitches and end up with a trapezoid! This is a common frustration. So use those stitch markers or count those stitches! To count stitches, look at the top of your work and count the “Vs” across, like so:

The “Vs”, highlighted
How to count the “Vs”

Turning chs never count as a st.

To adjust the width of this scarf, ch any number.
