Add a touch of tartan to your next crocheted baby blanket! The Plaid Crochet Baby Blanket features woven strands to achieve the look without complicated colorwork.
There are so many stunning plaid baby blanket patterns out there and I love all of them. Many involve crocheting an entire mesh fabric and weaving in strands all throughout, which is SO pretty, but I wanted something a little simpler!
Here you’ll crochet a few columns of mesh in a blanket otherwise comprised entirely of double crochets. Then you’ll weave just fifteen chain strands through to create a simple plaid.
I’ve included many step-by-step photos below!
PS: I used a few stash yarns for this project. Later my husband said the burnt orange yarn looks red, so it’s giving Christmas vibes when the intention was a bit more Irish. What do you think?

If you’d like to grab yarn from just one company, I would suggest substituting the Pound of Love yarn for 3 skeins of I Love This Yarn in Dark Olive or Light Sage, OR substituting I Love This Yarn! for Color Theory Yarn from Lion Brand, 1 skein each in Ivory and Canyon.

Plaid Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern
Ch 102.
Row 1: Dc in the second ch from hook and in each of the next 11 chs, [*ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in the next st; rep from * four times more,** dc in the next 24 sts] three times ending the final rep at **, dc in the last 11 chs, ch 1, turn. <86 dcs, 15 ch-1 sps>
Row 2: Dc in the first 12 sts, [*ch 1, sk 1 st, dc in the next st; rep from * four times more,** dc in the next 24 sts] three times ending the final rep at **, dc in the last 11 sts, ch 1, turn. <86 dcs, 15 ch-1 sps>
In other words: Dc in each dc and work a ch-1 over each ch-1 sp across, ch 1, turn. <86 dcs, 15 ch-1 sps>
Rows 3-7: Rep Row 2.
For the rest of the pattern, rep Row 2, working the remaining rows in the following colors:
Rows 8-9: White
Row 10: Orange
Rows 11-12: White
Rows 13-27 (15 rows): Green
Rows 28-29: White
Row 30: Orange
Rows 31-32: White

With green yarn still attached, continue in border pattern.
Camel Stitch Border
Border Notes: Border is worked in joined rnds same-side facing. This will become the right side of the blanket. In Rnd 1, aim to place about 3 sts per 2 row-ends for a border that lies flat.
Rnd 1: [Hdc across, in the corner work (hdc, ch 1**, hdc)] four times ending the final rep at **, sl st join. <Not including ch-1 corners, the top and bottom of the blanket should have 101 sts, and the sides should have 88 sts.>
Rnd 2: Ch 1, hdc back into the ch-1 corner, [hdc in the back third loop of each st across, in the ch-1 corner sp work (hdc, ch 1**, hdc)] four times ending the final rep at **, sl st join. <2 sts increased on each side of the blanket.>
Rnds 3-8: Rep Rnd 2. <At the end of Rnd 8, excluding ch-1 corners, the top and bottom of the blanket should have 115 sts, and the sides should have 102 sts.>
Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends.
Woven Strands
Make 3 in orange and 12 in white.
Leaving a 12″ tail, ch 98. Leaving another 12″ tail, cut yarn and fasten off.
Assembly
Lay out the blanket rs-facing. Beginning with the leftmost column and with one of the white chain strands, weave through the mesh holes over and under the ch-1s. You can use your finger or a crochet hook to assist. When you’ve pulled the strand all the way through, you may need to tug throughout for the strand to fit evenly along the height of the blanket.
Attach the chain to your blanket. First, insert your hook into the st beneath the first ch-1 sp of the column.
Grab the tail and pull up a loop.
Ch 1 to attach.
Fasten off.
Rep for the other end of the chain.
Rep for the next column with another strand of white, making sure to weave above and below the opposite ch-1 sps from the strand next to it to offset the strands.
Continue working left to right. Next you will use one strand of orange, then 4 strands of white, 1 strand of orange, across. You will end with 2 strands of white.
Weaving in the Strands
Flip the blanket to the wrong side (I always prefer weaving in ends on the wrong side of projects). Thread the yarn through the long chain until you reach a horizontal stripe in the matching color.
Then, weave the tail horizontally into the matching color to secure. I like to go back and forth three times.
