Pregnancy Temperature Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

Crochet a temperature baby blanket while you or someone you love is expecting! The Pregnancy Temperature Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern is designed to be worked up over the course of about nine months and gifted to a new baby as soon as he or she is born.

This was a fun one to design! My goal was to design a blanket where the size worked out well for preemies as early as 28 weeks or late-termers born at 42 weeks! I tried five different stitches that produced gorgeous ribbing, and half double crochet in the front side loop was the winner!

I made this one for my fourth baby! She arrived at 37w3d, and the blanket turned out 36 x 39, which is a size I’m quite happy with!

Here she is with her new blanket!

36″ x 39″ is a nice size for toddlers, too, as seen here with her older sister!

The design features three columns. Instead of doing one row per day, you do 1/3 of a row per day. I liked the effect and also the nod to how pregnancies are broken into trimesters!

The design is finished with one of my favorite borders, the camel stitch! Which I use all the time.

I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Tips for Planning Your Pregnancy Temperature Blanket

You can get a run-down of everything I’ve learned making a temperature blanket in the class I taught for FaveCrafts! You can watch the replay here: Learn How to Make a Temperature Blanket.

To make a pregnancy temperature blanket, it’s helpful to know the mom’s LMP for the start date. If you’re making this for a friend, that can be an awkward question LOL. Instead, you can ask her due date, then calculate 9 months back from that date. The blanket does not have to have *perfectly* accurate dates to turn out beautifully.

A few other temperature blanket planning resources I love:

Abbreviations (US)

  • ch(s): chain(s)
  • hdc(s): half double crochet(s)
  • rep: repeat
  • rnd(s): round(s)
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sp: space
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Special Stitches

Half Double Crochet in the Front Side Loop: When working in rows, yarn over and insert your hook only in the loop closest to you, then complete your half double crochet as usual. This should produce a ribbing on the back of your work.

Here is a short video demonstrating how to hdc in the front side loop.

Half Double Crochet in the Back Third Loop: When working in the round, yarn over and insert your hook only in the loop furthest from you, then complete your half double crochet as usual. This should produce a ribbing on the front of your work.

Here is a short video demonstrating how to hdc in the back third loop.

Ch 106 using your day 1 color.

Row 1: Hdc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, changing color every 35 sts as needed here and throughout, ch 1, turn. <105 hdcs>

Tip: Mark the back third loop of the first st of each row so it’s easy to identify.

Row 2: Hdc in the front side loop of each st across, ch 1, turn. <105 hdcs>

Row 3-end*: Rep Row 2. If baby is born on a day that falls in the middle of a row, finish the row in any color(s) of your choosing.

*Your baby blanket will range anywhere from 66-98 rows depending on the length of the pregnancy. This range covers a baby born as early as 28 weeks up to a baby born at 42 weeks.

Cut yarn and fasten off.

Suggestion: Decide which side will be the back of your blanket and pull all the yarn tails to the back. Then, work your border with the front of the blanket facing you. Weaving in all tails on the back will keep the front looking a bit neater.

Camel Stitch Border

Border Notes: Border is worked same-side facing in joined rnds. In Rnd 1, as you work along the side, aim to place 5 hds per 4 row-ends for a border that lies flat.

Rnd 1: [Hdc across, in the corner work (hdc, ch 1, pm**, hdc)] four times ending the final rep at **, sl st join.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, hdc back into the ch-1 corner, [hdc in the back third loop of each st across, in the ch-1 corner sp work (hdc, ch 1, pm**, hdc)] four times ending the final rep at **, sl st join. <2 sts increased on each side of the blanket>

Rnds 3-6: Rep Rnd 2. <At the end of Rnd 6, excluding ch-1 corners, 8 sts increased on each side from Rnd 2>

Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ALL THOSE ENDS!

Pin for later!
