Sunset colors meet a beautiful, textural stitch in the Sunset Fields Crochet Baby Blanket! This two-row repeat is super easy to memorize and creates a beautiful fabric.

Much of the blanket is worked in single crochet, so this is not a quickie pattern, but it is a super relaxing stitch that you can unwind with.

The project is finished off with a variation on single crochet called the waistcoat stitch, or center single crochet, which creates a knit-like texture.

I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Special Stitches
Field Stitch: Insert your hook three rows below the st you just completed, yo, pull up a loop to the height of the current row, sk one st, insert your hook three rows below the next stitch, yo, pull up a loop to the height of the current row, yo, pull through all three loops. Note that this st is worked across 3 sts 2 rows below but it only takes the place of one st on the active row. So it doesn’t happen IN the next st, but it sits above the next st.

1. Insert your hook three rows below the st you just completed. In this row, you will work into the starting ch.

2. Yo and pull up a loop to the height of the current row.

3. Sk one st, insert your hook three rows below the next stitch, yo, pull up a loop to the height of the current row.

4. Yo, pull through all three loops.

5. Here is an example of what that looks like two rows later. So again, insert your hook three rows below the st you just completed.

6. Yo and pull up a loop to the height of the current row.

7. Sk one st, insert your hook three rows below the next stitch, yo, pull up a loop to the height of the current row.

8. Yo, pull through all three loops.

Waistcoat Stitch: Insert your hook in the center of the v that makes up the body of the sc below. Yo and pull up a loop. You will have 2 loops on your hook. Yo and pull through both loops.
Here is a helpful YouTube Short showing the waistcoat stitch. Or, you can check out the step-by-step photos below.
1. Insert your hook in the center of the v that makes up the body of the sc below. Here is a pin showing exactly where that is on the front side.

2. Here is where that emerges on the back side, to the right of the upside-down v, and beneath three loops of yarn.

3. Here is what that looks like with the crochet hook, now.

4. Yo and pull up a loop. You will have 2 loops on your hook.

5. Yo and pull through both loops.

Waistcoat Stitch Border

Border Notes: Border is worked in joined rnds rs-facing. During Rnd 1, as you work along the sides of your blanket, aim to place about 2 scs for every 3 row-ends for a border that lies flat.
Rnd 1: With F, pull up a loop in the upper right-hand corner, ch 1 to attach, sc in the same st, [sc across, in the corner work (sc, ch 1, pm**, sc)] four times ending the final rep at **, sl st join. <Excluding marked corners, you should have 99 sts on each edge of the blanket.>
Rnds 2-8: Ch 1, sc back into the marked ch-1 corner sp, (working backwards for this st keeps our seam in the corner), [waistcoat st in each st across, in the corner work (sc, ch 1, pm**, sc)] four times ending the final rep at **, sl st join. <2 sts increased on each edge each rnd. At the end of Rnd 8, excluding marked corners, you should have 113 sts on each edge of the blanket.>
Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends.
