Single Crochet Spike Stitch Dishcloth

I love having a TON of dishcloths for wiping toddler hands after meals and cleaning off the table and counters. I’m on the hunt to find my favorite dishcloth stitch and size. I LOVE the knit dishcloths my grandmother-in-law gave us before she passed away because of their smallish size, smooth texture, and tight weave. It’s a classic design and you can find a free pattern for it here. I’m not much of a knitter though so I’ve been making crocheted dishcloths instead. Here is the latest addition to that collection!

The single crochet spike stitch to me is a great stitch to practice ahead of learning the honeycomb stitch, which I use in a few upcoming patterns. Stay tuned. šŸ˜‰

When I first saw the honeycomb stitch, I thought that was way too involved for me. Having learned the single crochet spike stitch, the honeycomb stitch then felt so much more attainable!

In any case, on its own the single crochet spike stitch is just beautiful. I love the woven texture it produces, which is why I’ve used a version of this stitch for a deliciously cozy baby blanket, and that pattern will be available in a few months. I have a step-by-step photo tutorial for that alternative version of the stitch coming soon as well.

Materials

  • Size 4 worsted weight cotton yarn. The two yarns featured in this post:

  • Size h/5mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations

  • ch(s): chain(s)
  • sc(s): single crochet(s)
  • sp(s): space(s)
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Finished Size

6″ x 6″

Gauge

13.5 sts x 19 rows = 4″ x 4″

Notes

You may have noticed that the darker brown dishcloth (Lily Sugar’n Cream Ombres Yarn in Chocolate Ombre) has different dimensions than the lighter brown version (Peaches & Creme in Oasis). I made the darker brown dishcloth first, didn’t love the size, so I modified the pattern. This is a super easy pattern to adjust if you’d like a larger dishcloth! You just need to chain any odd number of stitches to start.

If you’d like a video tutorial of this stitch, I like this one: How to Crochet Alternating Spike Stitch. Note that her ch 1 sts at the start of each row do count as a st, and mine do not.

Single Crochet Spike Stitch Dishcloth

Ch 21.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each st across. (20 sts) Ch 1 and turn.

Row 2: Sc in the 1st st, sc beneath the next st (spike st). For this row that means spike sts are worked back into the starting ch. As you work spike sts, pull up the loop to the height of your current row so the fabric does not bunch up. *sc in the next st, spike st into the next st* to the end of row. You should end on a spike st. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 3-28: Sc in the 1st st, spike st in the next st, *sc in the next st, spike st in the next st* to end of row. Ch 1 and turn.

Fasten off, cut yarn, and weave in ends.

I hope you enjoy this pattern! You can pin it for later using the image below:

  1. […] If the honeycomb stitch seems very involved, I think a nice “gateway” stitch is the single crochet spike stitch. You can work up a super quick little dishcloth to get familiar with that stitch using my Single Crochet Spike Stitch Dishcloth pattern. […]
