Learn how to crochet the interlocking block stitch, also known as the plaid stitch! Using super bulky yarn, this baby blanket pattern works up super quickly!

I just love the color changes with this stitch! Choose three contrasting colors and carry the yarn up the sides for easy colorwork and very few ends to weave in.

I thought a single crochet spike stitch border would pair nicely with the tall double crochets formed by this stitch. I love the effect!

I hope you enjoy this cozy quick pattern!

Pattern is worked carrying the colors up the sides.

If you don’t own a size M/13 9mm crochet hook, size N/15 10mm works nicely too and shouldn’t affect gauge too dramatically.

Single Crochet Spike Stitch Border
Each round of your border should have an odd number of sts not including marked corners. Border is worked right-side facing.
Rnd 1: With color A, pull up a loop of yarn in the upper righthand corner of the blanket. In the same corner, work (ch 1, sc, pm, sc). [Sc in each st across. In the corner, work (3 scs, pm in the middle sc). As you work along the sides, aim to place 6 sc for every 5 row-ends. In the corner, work (3 scs, pm in the middle sc)] twice. When you reach your starting corner, instead of 3 scs, work 1 sc, then sl st join to your marked first st of the rnd. <Excluding your 4 marked corners, the top and bottom of your blanket should have 51 sts, and the sides should have 55 sts.>
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc back into the marked sc from the last rnd (this keeps your seam in the corner). Pm, sc in the same st. [*Sc beneath the next sc (spike st), sc in the next st; rep from * until there is one st left before the marked corner. Spike st beneath the next st. In the corner, work (3 scs, pm in the middle sc)] four times. When you reach your starting corner, instead of 3 scs, work 1 sc, then sl st join to your marked first st of the rnd. <Excluding your 4 marked corners, the top and bottom of your blanket should have 53 sts (27 spike sts and 26 scs), and the sides should have 57 sts (29 spike sts and 28 scs).>
Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2. <Excluding your 4 marked corners, the top and bottom of your blanket should have 55 sts (28 spike sts and 27 scs), and the sides should have 59 sts (30 spike sts and 29 scs).>
Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends.
