Super Bulky C2C Moss Stitch Baby Blanket for Charity

Use those leftover skeins of super bulky yarn and make a C2C Moss Stitch Baby Blanket for Charity!

I am so excited about these colors and the way this project turned out!!

I had lots of teal, blue, gray, and white super bulky yarns in my stash from past baby blanket projects like these:

I was eager to create a sort of eclectic but charming baby blanket with the leftovers.

When I saw Warm Up America! was doing a baby blanket charity drive, I set to work that night making this baby blanket!

My very first pattern I ever designed was a C2C Moss Stitch Stashbusting Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern. I feel so nostalgic about that pattern. It didn’t have a border and primarily featured worsted weight yarn. You can visit that post to get all the details if you’d like!

I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Abbreviations (US)

  • ch(s): chain(s)
  • pm: place marker in the stitch you just created (unless otherwise indicated)
  • rep: repeat
  • rnd: round
  • sc(s): single crochet(s)
  • sl st(s): slip stitch(es)
  • sk: skip
  • sp(s): space(s)
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Materials

  • Various Weight 6 Super Bulky yarns from your stash. I used partial skeins of the following:
    • Bernat Baby Blanket Weight 6 Super Bulky (100% Polyester, 220yd/201m, 10.5oz/300gm)
      • Misty Jungle Green 1 skein (border color)
      • Mini Succulents partial skein
      • White partial skein
    • Lion Brand Hometown Weight 6 Super Bulky (100% Acrylic, 81 yds/74m, 5oz/142gm), Catskills Corner partial skein
    • Juicy Couture Luxe Velour Sparkle Weight 5 Bulky (98% Polyester, 2% Metallic, 107yd/98m, 3.5oz/100gm), Regal Blue partial skein
    • Yarn Bee Cozy Occasion Weight 6 Super Bulky (100% Polyester, 101yds/92m, 5.5oz/156gm), Ivory partial skein
    • Yarn Bee True Colors Weight 6 Super Bulky (100% Acrylic, 76 yds/70m, 5oz/142gm), Gray partial skein
    • Bernat Casa Weight 6 Super Bulky (78% Polyester, 22% Acrylic, 170 yd/155m, 7.9 oz/225g) Turquoise partial skein
=The entire blanket weighs 29.28 oz, so make sure you have at least 30 oz/850 g, 630 yd/576 m of scrap yarn on hand in order to complete this project. For example, 3 skeins of Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn should do the trick!
  • Size L/11 8mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Finished Size

37″ x 37″ with border | 31″ x 31″ before border

Gauge

9 sts x 8 rows in moss st = 4″

OR first 7 rows in pattern = 4″ x 4″ x 5.5″ triangle

Notes

You can get an ads-free, easy-to-print PDF of this pattern over at Ravelry or at Etsy!

You’ll notice in the pattern I am liberal about the use of stitch markers. I highly suggest using them during the first few rows until the pattern is clearly formed, and always during the start and end of rows.

If you include some weight 5 bulky yarn in your project like I did, I suggest holding two strands together. This will help achieve a similar weight to the size 6 yarns comprising the majority of the blanket.

To adjust the size of this blanket, complete any number of increase rows.

Border

The moss st border requires an odd number of sts along each side of the blanket. If your Rnd 1 ends up with a stitch count different from what I outline below, make sure you end up with an odd number on your blanket.

Border is worked rs facing.

Rnd 1: Using your border color, pull up a loop of yarn in any corner. Ch 1, sc in the same st to attach. Sc along each side of the blanket, aiming to work about 4 scs per 3 rows. When you reach each corner work (sc, ch 2, pm, sc) in one st. When you return to your starting corner, sc, ch 1**, pm, sl st join. <Not including the marked corners, aim to have 71 sts along each side of the blanket.>

**We are only doing a ch 1 in the starting corner to minimize the size of the eyelets that will form since this will be our seam.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc back into the marked ch-1 corner. Working back into the starting corner in this way keeps your seam in the corner. *[Ch 1, sk 1 st, sc in the next st] across until there is 1 st left in the row. Ch 1, sk 1 st. Work (sc, ch 2, pm, sc) in the marked ch-2 corner sp. Rep from * around until you reach your starting corner. Sc, ch 1, pm, sl st join to the first sc in the rnd. <73 sts along each side, or 37 scs and 36 ch-1 sps>

Rnds 3-7: Ch 1, sc back into the marked ch-1 corner. *[Ch 1, sk 1 st, sc into the next ch-1 sp] across until there is 1 st left in the row. Ch 1, sk 1 st. . Work (sc, ch 2, pm, sc) in the marked ch-2 corner sp. Rep from * around. In the final corner of the round, work sc, ch 1, pm, sl st join. <At the end of Rnd 7, you should have 83 sts along each side, or 42 scs and 41 ch-1 sps>

Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends.

Pin for later!

    1. Hi Gema, yes absolutely! Increase to desired size, keeping in mind the border is about 3 inches wide, so factor that into your calculations. :) You’ll of course also need more yarn. I could help calculate the yardage if you would like, just let me know! And then for the border instructions, you will have a different number of stitches along each side. Aim to work about 4 scs per 3 rows. Let me know if I can help with anything else, and enjoy!! Warmly, Dana

    1. Yay!! I’m so glad you like it! It was such a fun one to work up, and it feels SO good to get a bunch of super bulky yarn out of the stash and into a project since those skeins take up a lot of space. Happy crocheting!
